The things I’ve seen are burned into me, like scars that refuse to fade.

Before, she lived inside the fence. Before, she was never allowed to leave the property, never allowed to talk to Outsiders, never allowed to speak her mind. Because Father John controlled everything—and Father John liked rules. Disobeying Father John came with terrible consequences.

But there are lies behind Father John’s words. Outside, there are different truths.

Then came the fire.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for sending me an ARC in exchange for an honest review!

After The Fire is an intense, emotionally charged, fast-paced novel that reads like a thriller. We follow Moonbeam, who is a survivor of the Lord’s Legion. In the cult, the women and children especially, are abused, mentally, physically, and sexually. All the members follow the cult’s leader, Father John, who basically manipulated all these people to get what he wanted.

I’ve heard about cults, but I’ve never known what they really are. This book opened my eyes to that dark part of religion. Although not all cults are about religion, this one was. I hated having to take a break because I wanted to know more. It was so raw, and we got to see Moonbeam relive the horrors she experienced, but we also got to see how that helped her, and how she got better.

Moonbeam was such a tough, well-developed character. Her mother was banished from the cult for “heresy,” and even when she questioned or lost her faith, she continued to stay strong for her brothers and sisters, never letting anyone know how she really felt.

One thing I do want to mention is that this book is inspired by the real events of David Koresh, the Branch Davidian and the Waco siege in 1993.

Overall, this was a really great book! It opened my eyes about cults and what really goes on in one. It was an emotional roller coaster, and Will Hill did a great job with the writing, the chapters interchanging between before and after the fire. It comes out tomorrow, and I highly recommend that you preorder it or pick it up because you will not be disappointed!

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my blog post! Please leave a comment so I can show my appreciation! Hope you have/had a good day!
