Alex Strangelove is a Netflix original movie directed by Craig Johnson and produced by Ben Stiller, Jared Ian Goldman, and Nicholas Weinstock. It is rated TV-MA. I’d recommend it to those 16 and over.
Rating: 3.5/5 stars.
Alex Strangelove is about a guy named Alex Truelove. I don’t understand where the movie name comes from. He has a good friend group and a great girlfriend. But, he’s a virgin. *gasps*
He hasn’t met the “right girl” yet, but now he has. They go to a party, where Alex meets Elliot, the guy who changes his feelings. From there, Alex goes on a journey to determine whether he’s straight or not.
I liked this movie. It was fun, and it dealt with coming out, something a lot of teens and adults experience. At the beginning of the movie everything is going okay, but slowly things started changing. I think it did a good job of portraying someone questioning their sexuality. Of course, everyone’s journey is different.
As soon as Alex and Elliot get together, the movie ends. It was a little abrupt because certain things weren’t cleared up and certain storylines were never explored. The parents didn’t get much time on-screen which was also disappointing.
Overall, I didn’t have high expectations but I was pleasantly surprised!
